Accademia

We did two museums today: Accademia and Uffizi. Yes, we’re exhausted now. 🙂 Breaking this up into two posts, lest it be one verrrrry long post with nearly fifty pictures.

First: Accademia. Located north of the Duomo, this museum is home to Michelangelo’s David. That’s the main attraction, for obvious reasons. There are other galleries and rooms, however, and we went through these as well. Not surprisingly, these exhibits contain a lot of religiously centric art, but there are plenty of Renaissance works as well. I liked this one, but sadly I did not get a shot of the name plate as well, so I can’t tell you what it is.

Nice example of the Christ Pantocrator motif (is motif the right word?) here with Peter on the left and Paul on the right. Love the pink there, Paul. IMG_1945 (2)

There’s also a room full of plaster casts that is appropriately casual- they are plaster casts, after all – but startling in the sheer lack of organization.

But, like I said, the main attraction? That one sculpture by Michelangelo.

I love this angle more. IMG_1973 (2)

There’s also a series of unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo in the same hallway, and these are beautiful and meaningful in their own right. Insert statement here about the existential state of humanity as you look at these half-formed beings struggling to escape the very material from which they are made.

Grazie, Michelangelo.
